Jake’s Life Transformed

Before I was accepted on the Road to Logistics program, I had been out of work for 6 months following an injury at work when I was a builder. I damaged my knee and was unable to return to manual work. During my 6 months of unemployment things were really difficult. I have a 16 month old daughter and my partner, daughter and I had to move back in with my parents as we were really struggling financially.

I was looking at my options when my work coach at the job centre told me about the Road to Logistics and Freeports East program. I have always enjoyed driving and this seemed like a perfect solution to my problems. I was lucky enough to be accepted onto the course.

Once I completed my training, passed my test and got my C+E qualification, I secured a job working at the Port of Felixstowe as a Shunter Driver.

My life has now transformed. We have been able to afford to move out of my parents house into our own place, I have money coming in and life in general is more healthy and happy. Everything is so much better since I got my job.

The job itself is brilliant, I am really enjoying being involved in the shipping aspect of logistics – it is really interesting. What is also brilliant is that there is loads of opportunity for career progression. It really is a job for life and the added bonus is that I don’t have to work away from home so my work/life balance is perfect.

I couldn’t be happier. Thank you to Road to Logistics and Freeports East for giving me this opportunity.
